Birth Chart FAQ

Everything you need to know about birth charts, how they work, and what they mean for your life

01
What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other celestial bodies in the zodiac signs and houses, creating a unique cosmic fingerprint that astrologers use to understand your personality, potential, and life patterns.

02
Why do I need my exact birth time?

Your birth time is crucial because it determines your Rising sign (Ascendant) and the house placements of your planets. The Rising sign changes approximately every 2 hours, and house positions can shift throughout the day. Without an accurate birth time, you'll miss important insights about your personality and life themes. If you don't know your exact time, try using noon as an approximation, but be aware that some interpretations may not be accurate.

03
What's the difference between Sun, Moon, and Rising signs?

Your Sun sign represents your core identity and ego - who you are at your essence. Your Moon sign reflects your emotional nature, inner world, and unconscious patterns. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is how others perceive you and the mask you wear in public. Together, these three form the foundation of your astrological personality, often called the 'Big Three.'

04
What are houses in astrology?

Houses are twelve sections of your birth chart that represent different areas of life experience. For example, the 1st house relates to self-identity, the 7th house to partnerships, and the 10th house to career and reputation. The planets in each house show where you'll experience the energies of those planets most strongly in your life.

05
What are aspects in my birth chart?

Aspects are the geometric angles between planets in your chart, showing how different planetary energies interact with each other. Common aspects include conjunctions (0°, planets working together), trines (120°, harmonious energy), squares (90°, tension and growth), and oppositions (180°, balance and integration). Aspects reveal the dynamics and patterns in your personality.

06
How accurate is the online birth chart calculation?

Modern online birth chart calculators are highly accurate when you provide precise birth data. Our calculator combines VSOP87 planetary theory (developed by the Bureau des Longitudes in Paris) with algorithms from Jean Meeus's "Astronomical Algorithms" to calcluate positions with arcminute precision across 4,000 years. Other popular chart calculators often use popular software like Swiss Ephemeris.

07
What if I don't know my birth location?

You need to know at least the city where you were born. The geographical location affects your chart because it determines your local time zone and the horizon line used to calculate houses and your Rising sign. If you're unsure of the exact hospital, using the city center is usually sufficient for accurate calculations.

08
Can my birth chart predict the future?

Birth charts don't predict specific events but rather reveal potentials, tendencies, and timing for personal growth. Think of your chart as a weather forecast for your soul - it shows the cosmic climate you were born into and how you might navigate life's challenges and opportunities. Astrology is better understood as a tool for self-awareness and timing rather than fortune-telling.

09
What are the different house systems?

House systems are different methods for dividing the birth chart into twelve houses. Whole Sign is the oldest system (used by ancient Greek and Hellenistic astrologers) where each zodiac sign equals one complete house. Placidus (developed by 17th-century monk Placidus de Titis) became the most popular modern system and divides houses based on time rather than space. Equal House (Hellenistic but later than Whole Sign) divides the chart into twelve 30° segments starting from the Ascendant; like Whole Sign, all houses are equal sizes, but they may start at the Ascendant degree rather than the beginning of the Ascendant's zodiac sign. Each system can give different house placements for your planets, though Whole Sign is often preferred by beginners and traditional astrologers for its simplicity and historical authenticity.

10
How often should I check my birth chart?

Your birth chart never changes - it's a snapshot of your birth moment. However, you can study it repeatedly as you grow and gain life experience, often discovering new layers of meaning. Many people find it helpful to revisit their chart during major life transitions, birthdays, or when working on personal development.

11
What's the difference between tropical and sidereal astrology?

Tropical astrology (used in Western astrology) is based on the seasons and the relationship between Earth and Sun, with Aries beginning at the Spring Equinox. Sidereal astrology aligns with the actual constellations in the sky. Most Western astrologers use tropical, while Vedic astrology typically uses sidereal. Our calculator is based on traditional Western astrology, so it uses the tropical system.

12
Are retrograde planets significant in my chart?

Yes! When a planet appears to move backward in the sky from Earth's perspective, it's called retrograde. In your birth chart, retrograde planets often indicate areas where you process energy more internally or differently than most people. These planets may represent talents that develop later in life or themes you'll revisit multiple times for deeper understanding.
